RGFN User's Guide

Registration

To really use the power of the networks, you need to become a registered RGFN user. Only registered users can use email, read the newsgroups, and store files in a work area. The process is similar to obtaining a library card in that anyone can use the public facilities, but only card holders can check-out books. There is no charge to register with RGFN.

The Rio Grande Free Net service areas include the six West Texas counties, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and Juarez, Mexico. If you are from the RGFN local service area, you can register with the Rio Grande Free Net for a User ID. This is done on-line. On the MAIN MENU select the RGFN Administration area. Read the announcements and the agreement for use. Select the online registration from the menu and answer the questions. Registration takes one to two weeks. A postcard will be sent to you via U.S. postal service informing you of your User ID (two letters and three numbers).

In the meantime, you can check the User Directory in RGFN's Post Office, do a name search on the name that you registered under. When your registration is completed, your name and your User ID will appear in the RGFN directory.

NOTE: During registration, you are asked to supply a password. Don't forget this password, it is very difficult to have the password looked up for you. Then, the very first time you connect to RGFN after receiving your ID, RGFN tells you that your password is expired and you're asked to change your password. This new password should be unique and something that nobody will be able to deduce from your name, occupation, etc..
